There's plenty of free or premium software to play DVDs with and many of them do it better than Windows Media Player ever did. Earlier versions of Windows never really had reasonable patch notes, it's Windows 10 that does finally have patch notes. Microsoft is looking into the installation/uninstallation concerns, but it has never uninstalled anything of consequence for me or anyone I know, so if you don't have a crazy system setup it probably won't be an issue for you.
